The Aglianico Grape
Aglianico is an ancient black grape variety that has settled in Basilicata and Campania, Italy. It buds early, likes the sun and ripens late (November). If picked early, the full-bodied wines are more tannic than usual.
It is one of the few varietals that retains acidity in a hot climate. It has great ageing potential and even a few years in bottle makes this wine friendlier with a fruitier nose and more balanced tannins. Aglianico is used for blending too. In recent years, there have been experimental plantings in California, Canada and Australia.
