Austria

Austria has 35 officially approved grape varieties: 22 white and 13 red. The most widely planted varietal is Guüner Veltliner for white wine. Red wine production is increasing and now accounts for 30% of Austria’s wines. Label information is officially specified and quite comprehensive.

Wine production peaked in the 15th and 16th centuries, but Austria is repositioning itself as a producer of quality wines. The introduction of its Districtus Austriae Controllatus (DAC) appellation system in 2003 can only help this ambition.
