Wines Baga
The Baga Grape
Baga’s home is in the Portuguese central coastal area of Bairrada but it can also be found in the Beiras, including Dão. The late-ripening grapes are small and thick-skinned leading to a tannic wine with high acidity. If the season is cool, the grapes might not ripen fully and rain in September can lead to rot. However in a good year, the grapes result in a complex wine with aromas of black fruits, coffee, hay, tobacco and smoke. A little astringent when young, Baga wines have great ageing potential. This varietal has over 20 synonyms but Baga is by far the easiest to pronounce.
