The Blaufränkisch Grape
A varietal, home in Central Europe, particularly Austria where it is the second most popular red-wine variety. In Hungary, the wines produced are rarely exported. Blaufränkisch comes into bud early in the season, ripens late and is very productive. It needs warmth to ripen fully. Blaufränkisch is a deeply coloured wine, fruity, particularly black fruits, and spicy (pepper). If yields are restricted, the wine is more full bodied and merits oak ageing.
