Vieux Château Mazerat, Saint Émilion Grand Cru
- Bordeaux, France
"A new acquisition by proprietor Jonathan Maltus, who sold Grand Destieu in order to upgrade to this terroir, this 10-acre vineyard is planted with 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc. It is situated near several of the premier grand cru classes of St.-Emilion, including both Beausejours and Angelus." Robert M. Parker, Jr.
"Marzipan, nutmeg, toast, red cherries, some herbaceous lift, VCM tends to have the sweetest nose of the line-up. Luscious and ripe but really good acid backbone and succulent persistence, classy and better fruit on the palate than the nose." Tom Harrow, wien Guru
“I continue to love the Vieux Château Mazerat from Maltus, and the 2019 is another beautiful wine in the making, with beautiful ripeness in its blackcurrants, roasted herbs, chocolate, unsmoked tobacco, and damp earth-like aromas and flavors. Rich, full-bodied, and gorgeous on the palate, it has an incredibly seamless texture paired with plenty of opulence and texture as well as minerality on the finish. It's a gem of a wine.” 96-98 pts, Jeb Dunnuck,
"From Jonathan Maltus, a blend of 65% Merlot picked on October 1st, and 35% Cabernet Franc picked on October 9th, with just 13.8% alcohol. This is really distinctive in this vintage, taking another sideways step after Les Astéries, with a very elegantly composed nose, here made from darker fruits, blackcurrant, currant and black olive, but lifted and scented with rosehips, violets and freesias, the Cabernet component coming through on the nose I think. The palate feels very elegant and relaxed, carrying darkly grained threads of fruit. Fresh, taut and sinewy, a feature found across the Maltus portfolio in this vintage, the palate shows finely honed black fruits, with a perfumed freshness. Very composed in the finish, the transition into the length quite seamless, packed with ripe and tightly knit tannins and a long, tingling energy. Very fine potential." 94-96 pts, Chris Kissack
