The wonderful Domaine de Montille manages that difficult task of combining old-school classicism with dynamic forward-thinking. The result is a burgeoning family property that is very much at the top of its game, producing wines of exceptional quality: scintillating, proper Burgundies.
Étienne and his sister Alix inherited Domaine de Montille from their father Hubert, a man who made his mark on the Burgundian scene in the 1950s with a terroir-driven, estate-bottled approach to winemaking when 90% of the region’s wines were being sold to negociants. While remaining true to his father’s vision of creating elegant, pure and balanced wines, Étienne was instrumental in pushing the sustainability of the Domaine by abandoning all chemical fertilizers and herbicides in 1985 and fully transitioning to biodynamic farming in 2005.
Tasting at de Montille is always an education, especially when accompanied by the typically measured appraisal of head winemaker Brian Sieve. Sampling wines from 20 different appellations across the Côte d’Or (70% Premier Cru and Grand Cru sites), the Domaine’s consistently top-class reds and whites give an unrivalled perspective on the quality and style of the vintage.
We have recently partnered with Domaine de Montille to oversee the production of our own unique cuvees for the Hospices de Beaune and Kosher crowdfunded syndicates. We have all the faith and respect in the talents of Brian Sieve to produce spectacular results for our participating Club members.
Organic & Biodynamic Wines
With minimal intervention and low sulphur – the cornerstones of any good organic winemaker – critics argue you can actually taste this living environment, the wine’s ‘terroir’. Biodynamic winemaking goes beyond organics, it's a holistic approach to farming. Following the biodynamic calendar vineyard tasks will only occur on stated days and only natural products will be used.
