Domaine Jean Tardy Vosne-Romanee 'Les Vigneux'
2019 is Guillaume's best vintage since the latter and potentially his finest set of wines to date, with more concentration than 2017 but better tension than 2018. Overall the balance is flawless.
Guillaume was an early picker as usual and overall his yields were 35% down on 2018 (so about 10% lower than a normal year). His lieu dit sites all have old vines and allied to the complexity this brings is very dextrous tannin management, soft extraction and no pigeage, which gives wines which are supple and sophisticated. “2019 has the warmth and richness of 2015, with the freshness and terroir expression of 2016” says Guillaume. It's his best vintage since the latter and potentially his finest set of wines to date, with more concentration than 2017 but better tension than 2018. Overall the balance is flawless. The Haute Cote de Nuits ‘Maëlie’, a vineyard very near to Vosne Romanée, sets out his stall perfectly and is another example of this region over-delivering on its more modest price point. “The best Nuit Saint Georges village wine – it should be a 1er Cru” is how Guillaume describes ‘Bas de Combe’ – just look at where the vineyard is situated to see why! Yet again it’s on fine, structured form and I’ll be taking a case as I do every year. Meanwhile the more perfumed and elegant Vosne ‘Vigneux’ and sweet and succulent Gevrey ‘Champerriers’ were showing off their charms more obviously, and the NSG 1er Cru ‘Argillats’ really demonstrates the heights to which the village can rise. His Echezeaux, from a plot of 80 year-old vines abutting Grands Echezeaux, will be quickly snapped up by the lucky few, but right across the range there is something for all Burgundy lovers to enjoy here. Bravo Guillaume.
"Just below the cemetery, near Suchots, the vineyard is tantalising close to the eastern border of Romanée Saint Vivant Grand Cru, has shallow soils and plenty of gravel which really make the roots push deep for nourishment. Thus there are the small berries and low yields one expects from older vines (the vineyard was planted in 1986 – one of the younger of Tardy’s parcels). Floral, lifted red fruits, a touch of greenery, cacoa nibs, cedar and black truffle aromas. Palate deftly juxtaposes contrasting elements – is supple but concentrated, rich but vibrant, has a dark, inky bilberry and currant core and taut, red berry acidity." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
