One of the top domaines in Burgundy, Dugat-Py also has one of the most impressive and extensive cellars in the region, originally built in 11th century for the Abbey of Saint Benigné in Dijon. Loïc Dugat, now 13th generation, is continuing the family tradition of making some of the greatest and most sought-after wines in Burgundy, from the family’s eleven hectares of perfectly-sited vineyards, planted with vines averaging nearly seventy years old. Everything is done by hand, while a horse is used to plough a few of the vineyards. The domaine has been fully organic since 2003, with Loïc now working biodynamically across a number of sites. The wines are vinified with as little intervention as possible and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Since 2017 the use of new oak has been reduced which really allows the quality of these sites and the character of the old vine fruit to shine through from barrel. Under Loic’s stewardship and with a string of superb vintages, Dugat-Py is now firly back in the front rank of Burgundy’s top domaines. These are not inexpensive wines but if you consider that the village level “Vielles Vignes” and “Coeur du Roy” are better than most grower’s 1er Crus, whilst Dugat-Py’s 1er Crus are more thrilling than a lot of others’ Grand Crus then it helps put purchases in perspective.
"Vines over 70 years old on the Nuits side. Cask sample. Velvety impression on the nose with some vigour. Lively and very fresh – even with a note of green vegetation. By no means underripe but zestier than most wines from this stable. Quite a bit of tannin here." 16.5+ pts, Jancis Robinson
"The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Vieilles Vignes comes from two lieux-dits, Quartier des Nuits and Les Violettes, and sees 60% whole bunch with 50% new oak. It has a fragrant nose of raspberry, wild strawberry and a touch of cassis, plus light iodine scents that emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. There is fine salinity underlying this Vosne-Romanée, and impressive tension toward the finish. This should age well, as there is plenty of substance in evidence." 89-91 pts, Neal Martin, Vinous
"There are four barrels of the 2019 Vosne-Romanée Vieilles Vignes, derived as usual from holdings in Les Quartiers de Nuits—from the part of the lieu-dit that is not included within the boundaries of the Echézeaux Grand Cru—and contiguous Les Violettes. Mingling notes of wild berries and raspberries with exotic top notes of mandarin rind, Asian spices and peonies, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit complemented by complexifying carnal nuances." 91-93 pts, William Kelley, Wine Advocate
