Wines Carricante

The Carricante Grape

Native to the area around Mount Etna, Sicily, Carricante is a high-altitude grape variety, thriving in the volcanic soils for the past 1,000 years. Its name comes from “carica” meaning load in Italian – thought to represent Carricante’s high-yielding character.

Its crisp white wines have citrus aromas with hints of mint and aniseed but with a marked acidity and strong minerality. The grape variety can also be blended with Catarratto, another Sicilian varietal. It is a late-ripening variety with harvest taking place usually in late September, so the grapes enjoy a long, slow ripening.
