Whether to accompany your preferred sporting fixture or to enjoy in the garden as this glorious weather continues, here are some of my personal favourite wine choices from our newly updated sommelier selection for summer partying.

Villa Sparina Gavi di Gavi DOCG
Described once by someone (could have been me?) as top flight Chablis on a vespa, this is everything one could want in a summer white – racy, crisp and cool as a freshly laundered linen shirt.

Clemens Busch vom roten Schiefer
Today marks the start of “31 days of Riesling” but even if it didn’t, I’d have no hesitation to heartily recommending this wonderfully juicy, spicy, succulent, zingy, focussed wine from Mosel Maestro Clemens Busch. The balance of freshness and purity allied to depth of flavour and kaleidoscope of citrus and more exotic fruits, is dangerously moreish.

Timo Mayer Bloody Hill Pinot Noir
Wow – what a Pinot! Timo Mayer knocks it out of the park with this earthy, ferrous, sappy, tight red berry-fruited number, so called because its steep vineyards are “bloody hard work” to cultivate. The sweetness opens in the glass and it’s great served from a bottle cool to the touch – straight from the cellar.

Rall White
This Chenin-based blend with a hefty dollop of Verdelho and splashes of Chardonnay and Viogner is much greater than the sum of its curious parts, earning 94 points from the Wine Advocate and praise form Jancis Robinson. From one of Swartland’s pioneers Donovan Rall, this rich, textured but well-balanced white is an exciting alternative to white Burgundy this summer.

Villa Sparina Chiaretta Del Monferrato Montej DOC, Rosé
Another knockout wine from Villa Sparina – which has trumped every rosé from the south of France I’ve tried this season: More exotic (a pink Barbera?!?) yet satisfying; better value; and a unique, highly distinctive bottle (based on a Roman amphora) all go to show Piedmont is the new Provence!

Foxglove Zinfandel
Unbeatable BBQ wine which the Guardian’s David Williams raved about last year: “gorgeously svelte, succulent, silky zinfandel… This is zin for pinot lovers, with a nip of Italianate tanginess”. This is so much more sophisticated and elegant than a lot of thumpingly alcoholic Californian varieties, with none of the syrupy, rubbery secondary characters, just really beautiful, plush, perfumed fruit, and gentle, chocolatey tannins, which even mean you can enjoy lightly chilled.
