Castello di Ama, Haiku
- Tuscany, Italy
Ama was owned by the Firidolfi family during the Holy Roman Empire. The castle, which stands in the denomination, was probably destroyed in the fifteenth century during the Aragonese invasions in the Chianti area.
Haiku is a new wine that embraces the principles of honesty, depth, simplicity and naturalness that characterize the entire production of Castello di Ama.
The name comes from a traditional Haiku poem originating in Japan consists of three lines. It 'a poem by simple tones without any title, the world's shortest eliminating frills lexical and draws its strength from the suggestions of nature and the seasons. Given its brevity, the composition requires a great synthesis of thought and image.
"Representing a big step forward in the overall stylistic identity of this delicious wine, the 2011 Haiku really blew me away. Haiku is mostly Sangiovese blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Compared to the 2010 vintage, this edition is much richer and more fleshed out. I tasted this next to the 2010 that offers less volume and richness. This is a complete and generous expression with soft cherry layers that wrap thickly over the palate. Spice, leather and balsam herb drive the long, luscious finish. Castello di Ama performs very nicely in the warmer vintages, thanks to its high altitude vineyards." 92+ pts, Monica Larner, WA
"The 2011 Haiku, Ama's Sangiovese/Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend, is one of the darker, richer wines at the estate. Juicy dark cherries, plums, mocha, smoke and grilled herbs all flesh out in the glass. The style is forward, juicy and open-knit, but like all the Ama wines, I suspect the 2011 will also reward a fair amount of cellaring." 92 pts, Antonio Galloni
"Fascinating aromas of dried berries such as blueberries and blackberries. Flowers, too. Full body, round and silky tannins and a savory finish. Very drinkable now. A blend of 50% sangiovese, 25% merlot and 25% cabernet franc." 92 pts, James Suckling
