Global Rosé Masters 2018 Silver Medal

"A new discovery from the Terra Alta region of Catalonia and silver medal winners at the Global Rosé Masters 2018, this is an ultra-quaffable blush for summer. Don’t let the bright pink hue deter you, this is a very elegant wine featuring juicy strawberries along with a touch of citrus peel. Great with a variety of food, serve with everything from grilled fish & chicken as well as vegetable based dishes. Not one to be overlooked."
Stacey Smith for IndyBest, "13 best rosé wines" (June-2018)

This is a new celler owned by British interests who have slowly been buying vineyards with old vines of native grapes. The aim of the celler is to produce low volume hand made wines that capture the best of Terra Alta, a region of much potential that has for too long been dominated by uninteresting cooperatives.

Winemaking is under the supervision of Andrew Halliwell, who has made wine on 5 continents and brings a wealth of experience to the team. The 2016 wines are their first release.

The gorgeous lively colour of their rosé reveals a mixed fresh and stewed strawberry core with hints of Valencia orange and candied fruits. It is excellent as an aperitif, or served with grilled chicken, crab salad, or grilled tuna. Or it would make an interesting pairing with sushi and vegetable dishes such as ratatouille...

I enjoyed this wine and loved its full bodied flavour (unusual for a rose) but its 14.5% alcohol content took me by surprise and a glass or two in the garden one sweltering early evening this week, left me wondering what had hit me!

Ideal for immediate consumption... so it says on the label...and how right they are! wine arrived at 2pm today and by 6pm we were enjoying our first tasting...immediately took us back to sunny Catalunya...a full bodied rose but light at the same time...we detected raspberries, but definitely red fruits...not a shrinking violet of a wine, yet very user friendly and with a garden newly landscaped and a large terrace now complete I foresee many occasions to sit out and enjoy this summer. Cheers!

Celler Alimara

Andy McLeod and his wife Ali were introduced to wine early by their parents. Andy’s father spent a lot of time in international travel, enjoying gourmet dinners served with great wines, and wanted his family to share the experience. This grew into a shared love of wine, and Andy’s career postings in California and France allowed them to experience great winemaking up close. To feed his love of all things wine, Andy undertook a winemaking course from UC Davis, and the whole family embarked on obtaining various WSET qualifications. When son Rob and his partner Elena discovered the wine potential of Terra Alta, it was an easy decision to join with their parents and sister Isobel to invest in some vibrant vineyards dripping with ripe Mediterranean grapes. A couple of years later the family decision was made to invest in a winery, and now the wines of Celler Alimara are starting to flow.

“Alimara” in catalan means “beacon”. The fire beacons were placed on the top of hills to rapidly pass signals between towns and populations, and a beacon was a good example of how Andy and Ali wanted to be seen, signalling the growing quality and variety emerging from this fascinating area. “Llumí” is the “match” that lights the fire and starts the flames rising. “El Senyal” is the “signal” which is sent out across the land carrying the message from the heart of Terra Alta.
