Château Civrac is part of the brave new band of Bordeaux châteaux who are combining old world structure with New World fruit forwardness - and the result is that it is fast becoming a star of the Côtes de Bourg.
CASE OF 12
2008 has been drinking really well for a couple of years; juicy, soft fruit with some developing secondary aromas. Ripe and very gluggable, this is a claret that can be savoured on its own – or at least with friends rather than food!
It's difficult to find a drinkable red Bordeaux (claret) at a sensible price, with so many being rough and rustic (in a very bad way). This is the best value claret at this level that I've had in a while. It's more rounded and plush to taste, with lots of forest fruits which make it a good match with a Sunday roast.
What a wonderful bottle of wine. I would humbly guide you towards letting this decanter for a while, it really brings the wine to life. Just a very honest Bordeaux, subtle complexities with a medium legs. great to share a dinner parties as it will grace both the new and rounded palate. Puts a smile on my face.
Fruit driven, big style of Bordeaux with plenty of complexity and balanced acidity. Dark, peppery, leathery notes accompany bright plums and cherries with a touch of cedar oak and tobacco notes. Seriously good value!
I rather prefer the honesty of this wine to some of the more illustrious and horribly overpriced clarets in my wine rack. It's a massive step up from 'ordinary' claret, with a leather armchair plushness and bags of blackberry, blueberry and red plum fruit on the nose, followed by a rich but quite elegant texture on the mouth. Definitely worth it and a great crowdpleaser.
Such a great wine with depth of fruit, complex notes from all this bottle age - smooth tannins and finish, begging to be drunk. Awesome wine for the money

Mark Hellyar, School headmaster, farmer and surfer, had a dream of becoming a wine maker. Following his love for Bordeaux, he set up his vineyard, Château Civrac, in Côtes de Bourg. His idea is to fuse the quality and history of Bordeaux with the excitement and energy of the new world. With the help of the oenologist, Ludwig Vanneron, his “slow” approach, including hand harvesting and minimising any chemical treatments, gives ‘Bordeaux claret’ a modern feel. Château Civrac may be young, but its’ wine has generated numerous positive reviews in the press in both France and the UK.
