Wines Cinsault

The Cinsault Grape

Cinsault is a thick-skinned, black grape variety, generally low in tannins, but fruity, perfumed and light. It brings softness to blends and makes a refreshing rosé. It is heat and draught tolerant so popular in Algerian, Morocco, Tunisia and the Lebanon. However, it originates in the Languedoc Roussillon but is perhaps more well known in the Rhône, where it is one of the permitted varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Known in South Africa as Hermitage, it was crossed with Pinot Noir to make the country’s signature grape, Pinotage.
