The vines in our 10 ha vineyard has an average age of 50 years, consisting of 13 varieties of the appellation are about 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah-Mourvèdre, and 5% other varieties. The vineyard has always been looked after on low input principles to ensure quality and consistency of fruit.
The exuberantly fruit-driven wines of the Southern Rhône can be overly simplistic and lacking in sophistication but the better examples are richly hedonistic yet vivacious, packed with more spices than the markets of Zanzibar, and the very best like Clos des Brusquières are framed by a whiff of old leather, polished wood, incense, liquorice, parma violets and Cuticura like an energetic child sat fidgeting between grandparents in church.
What a wine - lovely, well-rounded wine which perhaps needs a bit of time open first but I'm going to enjoy my purchase with next Sunday's lunch.
Beautiful aroma, love the slight leathery and peppery nose. Good to drink on its own, this was my favourite from the summer party.
Chateauneuf-du-Pape is that dozen bottles I have in my wine rack for those days when a satisfying Rhonish wine is called for. So many CNDPs are rather monolithic and lumpen. In a straight shootout between this and another good CNDP, this one was a clear 2:1 winner. It's earthy and spicy on the nose - very alluring. But it's the taste that makes this wine. There's plenty of fruit in the background, but driven by an integrated spice and leather backbone, with just the right amount of fine tannins to accompany roast meat. This will be perfect with Chinese-style duck and plum sauce.

With the support of his mentor (and Godfather), the recently passed legend Henri Bonneau, Claude Courtil has run the family vineyard since 1969. The property is located in the north of the village, 500 metres from the Château des Papes, a place called "The Tresquoys”, which lies on a floor of pebbles, clay-limestone and sandy marl, "The Brusquières" and "Pradel".
