Every so often, a new release reminds us just how compelling great Riesling can be. Clemens Busch’s 2023s do exactly that – wines of precision, energy, and remarkable clarity.
Clemens and his wife Rita were the main feature of James Suckling's tasting report published earlier this year, where editor Stuart Pigott describes being "stunned by the 2023 vintage at Clemens Busch, with the entire range offering excellent to sensational quality." Out of 567 wines in the January report, just one received a perfect 100 points – Clemens' Raffes 2023, which captures the "essence of Mosel".
The rest of Clemens' wines rated between 96 and 99 points, starting at just over £200 in bond per 6 bottles! Our new offer focuses on his top Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru) dry Rieslings from his steep Marienburg vineyards in the Mosel. Production is tiny. Expression is vivid. Value is off the charts.
Clemens and his wife Rita have been pioneers in organic and then biodynamic viticulture since 1974, vinifying each parcel separately on the dramatic slopes of the Marienburg hill in Pünderich. Clemens has barely a hectare to his name and makes an extraordinary 30 different wines here. Were this practiced in Bordeaux for example, Lafite would make up to 3,000 different wines!
This new offer focuses on Clemens’ top crus as we have readily available older vintages (perfect for enjoying whilst you wait for these to mature). All wines are dry except for the sweet Auslesen (available in half bottles). If you've enjoyed Clemens before, this is your chance to secure the best he’s ever released. And if you’re new to these wines… welcome to something very special.
