Dom Pérignon 2018: 99 Suckling, 98 Galloni - best since 2008

Dom Pérignon 2018 has landed this morning, one of the most eagerly anticipated Champagne releases of the year. We had been told to expect good things from this release and eagerly anticipated a sample bottle. It did not disappoint. Easily the finest Dom Pérignon since the legendary 2008.

The critics who have published in full agree: both James Suckling and Antonio Galloni have awarded their highest-ever scores for the house. Suckling gives 99, a best-ever, equalled only by the 1990, which currently trades at £1,950 a case. Galloni gives 98. another best-ever, matched only by 2008, 2004, 2002, 1975 and 1962. That is extraordinary company.

Suckling calls it "weightless and refined for the vintage... a new style for Dom Pérignon?" Galloni is similarly struck: "explosive, bright and so vibrant in the glass... a Dom Pérignon of unreal precision and class."
At £798 a case, this compares well against the other 'best-ever' vintages, if you can even find them. The 2008 currently trades at £900–£1,000 a case. The 2004 at £790–930. The 2002 at £980–£1,200. The 1990 at £1,950. The 1975 and 1962 are essentially unobtainable.

We had huge numbers of pre-orders over the weekend, and demand shows no sign of slowing. Online purchase is strongly recommended.

Est. delivery in February, 2027

Dom Pérignon needs no introduction, though it rewards a closer look. The 2018 vintage was shaped by a warm, generous summer followed by a long, slow ripening season that gave the wines an unusual combination of richness and precision. This is a Champagne built on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Maison's own grand cru holdings, blended to a single vintage standard that has defined prestige cuvée Champagne since 1936. In 2018, the result is opulent without being heavy: ripe and creamy, but with enough chalky tension to keep everything honest.

We think this is one of the more immediately seductive Dom Périgons of recent memory. Drink it at a celebration, yes, but also with food.
