Weingut Stadlmann

Weingut Stadlmann is one of the historic names of Austria’s Thermenregion, just south of Vienna. The family has been making wine in Traiskirchen since 1780, and the estate is now run by eighth-generation winemaker Bernhard Stadlmann. Around 20 hectares are planted, mainly on the limestone-rich slopes around the Anninger, where many of the vines are old and deeply rooted.

Stadlmann’s real speciality is the Thermenregion’s two traditional varieties, Zierfandler and Rotgipfler. They’re not the most familiar Austrian grapes, but in Stadlmann’s hands they produce serious, ageworthy whites with plenty of texture, concentration and mineral character. The estate also grows Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Noir and St. Laurent. Farming is organic, while in the cellar Bernhard takes a fairly hands-off approach, using large wooden barrels and giving the wines plenty of time to mature.

It’s a traditional Austrian estate, but not one trading purely on history. The focus is firmly on old vines, limestone soils and the indigenous varieties of the Thermenregion, with the wines offering a very different side of Austrian wine to the more familiar Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.

This certified organic white from Austria’s Thermen region is an absolute treat, sourced from the Anninger vineyard.
