Domaine Ballot-Millot Meursault 1er Cru 'Perrières'
Tasting with Charles Ballot at Domaine Ballot Millot is always an exciting line-up and 2019 is no exception.
Tasting with Charles Ballot at Domaine Ballot Millot is always an exciting line-up and 2019 is no exception. A dry spring and hot, dry summer led to a reasonable sized harvest of small berries with concentrated juice and malolactic fermentation only finishing in October (at the earliest). Charles says that 2019 has the alcohol of 2003 but a complexity they could never have achieved back then, or even in 2009. Today however, as well as an evolution in winemaking, so too the vines are adapting to cope with the increasingly baking, arid conditions. Hence 2019s have the acidity profile of 2017. The Narvaux is a stand-out again - and will appear in the first in our mini-series of “Burgundy’s Best Value Hidden Gems” with Charles explain why. I’m normally a Charmes man when it comes to Ballot-Millot’s 1er Crus but the old vines in the Genevrieres (85+ years) really tell here, and the Perrieres was gorgeous too…
"From a parcel of forty-five year old vines right in the middle of the vineyard, very close to Grivault’s Clos des Perrieres Monopole (reputedly the finest site in the commune). Smoky pears and cinnamon dusted melon with hints of fresh ginger and even more faintly jasmine. Sweeter fruit on the palate than the Genevrieres but similarly impressive drive, tension and mineral persistence." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
"Clean lemon and lime. There follows a rich, more than exotic, nose and you can sense the ripeness, which Perrières can cope with. A massive wine, grand cru intensity, which also shows how and why it can cope with the extra degree. Some fresh and ripe pear notes, a wine of volume and majesty at the limit of ripeness. Very distinguished for the long term. Tasted: October 2020" 5 Stars, 93-97 pts, Jasper Morris MW
