Domaine Ballot Millot - 2019
Domaine Ballot-MillotTasting with Charles Ballot at Domaine Ballot-Millot is always an exciting line-up and 2019 is no exception. A dry spring and hot, dry summer led to a reasonable sized harvest of small berries with concentrated juice and malolactic fermentation only finishing in October (at the earliest). Charles says that 2019 has the alcohol of 2003 but a complexity they could never have achieved back then, or even in 2009. Today however, as well as an evolution in winemaking, so too the vines are adapting to cope with the increasingly baking, arid conditions. Hence 2019s have the acidity profile of 2017. The Narvaux is a stand-out again - and will appear in the first in our mini-series of “Burgundy’s Best Value Hidden Gems” with Charles explain why. I’m normally a Charmes man when it comes to Ballot-Millot’s 1er Crus but the old vines in the Genevrieres (85+ years) really tell here, and the Perrieres was gorgeous too.
