Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy’s most revered estates and this burgeoning family property is very much at the top of its game, producing wines of exceptional quality: scintillating, proper Burgundies, unusually across both reds and whites!

Working closely with our dear friends Étienne de Montille and winemaker Brian Sieve for almost a decade has been a real pleasure, helping us serve Club Members with incredible wines from across the wide-ranging de Montille portfolio. We’ve also been lucky enough to work with Étienne and Brian on some extraordinary opportunities, such as crowd-funding barrels Hospices de Beaune and bringing some of the world’s most illustrious kosher cuvée to the market.

Based in the beautiful village of Volnay in the heart of the Cotes-de-Beaune, Domaine de Montille was founded in 1730, though it wasn’t until the 1950s that Hubert de Montille made his mark on the Burgundian scene after inheriting 2.5 hectares in 1947. From there Hubert grew the domaine by adding prized parcels in Pommard and Puligny. A true Burgundy legend, his terroir-driven, estate-bottled approach to winemaking was visionary at the time when 90% of the region’s wines were being sold to negociants.

The Domaine is now in its ninth generation under the stewardship of sibling duo Étienne & Alix, who have largely remained true to their father’s vision of creating elegant, pure and balanced wines. In fact Étienne was instrumental in pushing the sustainability of the Domaine by abandoning all chemical fertilisers and herbicides in 1985 and fully transitioning to biodynamic farming in 2005. Then in 2012 de Montille acquired Chateau de Puligny (Étienne had been a director since 2001 but wanted the freedom to pursue his own vision), bringing the Domaine’s holdings to 35ha – 14 times higher than it was when Hubert started in 1947!

The Wines

Domaine de Montille has an enviable selection of Premier and Grand Cru sites in some of Burgundy’s most prestigious vineyards, such as Vosne-Romanee Malconsorts, Le Montrachet, Corton Charlemagne and Pommard Rugiens-Bas.

Most unusual is the Domaine’s strength in both Pinot Noir & Chardonnay, producing captivating, sensuous reds and racy, riveting whites. For this reason, we were especially pleased to work with Étienne & Brian on the Hospices de Beaune, where they have managed the élevage for some incredible wines for Club Members across both colours. Never to rest on our laurels, we then teamed up with de Montille on a range of incredible kosher Burgundies from some of their best parcels in Volnay, Pommard & Puligny-Montrachet.

From regional Bourgogne to Grand Cru, Étienne and Brian are doing wonderful things in Burgundy and we are thrilled to share these lovely wines with you.
