Henri Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes
One of the more recent additions to our Burgundy portfolio, and we are very excited to be working with Charles as he pushes forward into the front rank of Gevrey Chambertin growers.
One of the more recent additions to our Burgundy portfolio, and we are very excited to be working with Charles as he pushes forward into the front rank of Gevrey Chambertin growers. Introduced through his good friend Pierre Duroché, Magnien’s style of wines is nearer to Dugat-Py, in terms of richness, power and density. Charles suggests that 2019 is more classic than 2018, with better acidity and more fresh Pinot character, and “each terroirs is in the glass”. The domaine owns some prime sites in the north west quadrant of Gevrey, an area known locally as the Cotes St Jacques, including holdings in Lavaut and Estournelles and also a great strip running the length of Cazetiers, known as the “Le Petit Chambertin” because it has the same combination of soil types. Charles is also very particular about oak – choosing his own wood, exclusively now from the forests of Fontainbleu and Chatillons, and giving to his preferred tonneliere Chauvin. He finds the different forests favour different cuvées and that it is not so much the percentage of new oak but rather the type of wood and level of toast that is most important. These were among the most hedonistic, plush and muscular sets of wines we tried, although alcohol levels remained between 12.7 and 13.6% and there is no lack of tension and energy here. The Gevrey Vielles Vignes and lieu dit ‘Champerrier’ from 65-year old vines which “in blind tastings is a little 1er Cru” says Charles, are definitely smart buys from this address and then join the queue for the actual 1er Crus…
"From eight different plots all around the village, with vines between 40 and 100 years old. A richly enticing nose of dark chocolate, truffle, damp forests, liquorice and fig jam around a core of ripe strawberries and black cherries. Palate is spicy and deep fruited, with a tobbacic note and very plush, polished tannins well covered by concentrated, glossy cherry fruit. Velvety, pretty hedonic stuff." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
"The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from eight plots between 40 and 100 years old and includes 25% whole bunch. That stem addition is seamlessly integrated on the nose and allows the almost boisterous black cherry and raspberry scents to flourish. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, sweet and candied in style but judiciously spiced and very well structured on the long, saline finish. This is a stylish Gevrey-Chambertin." 92 pts, Neal Martin, Vinous
"Fine deep purple, with a significantly plumper nose here. The fruit comes from 8 lieux dits, the vines aged from 40 to 100 years. Sumptuous deep raspberry with some ripe strawberry on top, harmonious rich but graceful too. A lovely expression. Some spicy notes too as Henri Magnien (Charles’ grandfather) liked. Tasted: October 2020" 90-92 pts, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
