Domaine des Lauriers Picpoul de Pinet

Languedoc, Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Crisp White

"This wine from up in the back hills of the appellation is pithy and yeasty-fresh, with a spicy lemon-orange note which almost reminds me of wheat beer. There’s dancing acidity and a pungent finish." 89 points - Andrew Jefford, Decanter

The 30-hectare vineyard spreads through the Mediterranean garrigue and is in part situated on slopes of red earth covered with pebbles and gravel. These release the sun's heat to aid the ripening of the grapes. The association of garrigue, pine plantation soil types and the moisture-laden ocean breezes form a special microclimate, bringing cooler air from September to October, which is perfect for ripening late white varietals such as Picpoul.

The Domaine practices very conscientious viticulture and is a member of Terravitis, a collection of winemaking estates that adhere to responsible, environmentally friendly practices and promote a holistic and integrated approach to bio-diversity within their estates. This serves as an alternative to the organic certification.

Wine Grower

Brilliant robe with green tints. A young and pleasant nose, a symphony of aromas blending tropical fruit and peach. Harmonious and delicately shaded palate with an exuberant hint of tropical fruit.

Picpoul is often called the Muscadet of the south, although I’m not altogether sure why – perhaps because it’s inexpensive and has associations with the coast? It’s got a richer texture and less salinity but the better examples show a zestiness and only moderate alcohol to balance the orchard fruit character and creamy finish. Everyone likes a good Picpoul, it reminds you of your South of France holiday but still tastes delicious at home

We love picpoul ...perhaps more than muscadet ...and boy does this one deliver...even more 'rounded' than any picpoul we have tasted we found it more full bodied and well worth drinking either on its own but superb with some seared tuna as we discovered a couple of nights ago.

It's always a pleasure tasting such a fresh and fruity white made from something other than Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. It's no wonder Picpoul de Pinet has such a huge fan-base these days. Crisp, dry and with a high natural acidity this wine is very refreshing yet is has fruit in abundance and a softer texture too. A perfect match to the local Oysters in this part of the world.

This property near Pezenas is made up of many different parcels based on red clay slopes and surrounded by garrigue. They have recently had a modern winery built into a hillside and the wine produced is clean, fruit driven and well balanced. They are among a small group of Picpoul producers who are making wines that fit well with modern tastes while also being faithful to their appellation.
