Last year Neal Martin said “Duroché’s style of wine is very much in the mold of… Romain Taupenot in Morey-Saint-Denis" and that the latter is now “one of the most reliable and exciting estates” and we wholeheartedly concur.

Romain began harvesting (in Corton) on 16th September, a smaller crop than 2018, and yet was very happy with the quality of the fruit, which showed no rot and good physiological development – brown seeds (rather than green) indicating full phenolic ripeness. In 2017 the early concern was whether the wines would have enough flesh (they did), in 2019 the worry was regarding freshness and balance, but as the élévage has continued he is extremely pleased with the results. The wines have a different shape from 2018 – they are not as ample but there is excellence succulence and focus, vitality and length. Romain offered the following comparison when asked: “the vintage is a blend of 2010 and 2015: The wines don’t have quite the same energy of the former, or the gourmandise sweetness of the latter, nor do they have the definition of 2017, although they will gain more precision. They resemble 2016.” I’m pretty sure this is all positive(!), our tasting certainly was – from village level through to Grand Cru. My perennial favourite Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Riottes was a highlight, alongside a superb Mazoyeres-Chambertin (or Mazoyeres-Saint Denis as Romain impishly prefers to reference it).

"2000 was the first vintage that Romain vinified separately (from the Mazoyeres). Red cherries and linctus, touch of black truffle, mineral salts, and dried herbs and then more cassis. Palate is supple and satiny, but precise and delicately framed, despite the bolus of ripe sweet cassis fruit. There are fine-grained, sophisticated tannins too giving a framework. Really lovely even now, sinuous and sensuous." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru

"The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a straightforward, focused bouquet with brambly red fruit, briary and tea leaf aromas, though it just lacks the assertiveness and intensity you seek from a Grand Cru. The palate is better with a light spiced opening, good weight and cohesion with black pepper and sea salt infused red fruit. Quite Mazoyères in terms of structure towards the finish, this will benefit from 4-6 years in bottle." 93-95 pts, Neal Martin, Vinous

"Medium deep red, soft ripe strawberry nose, this is pretty powerful up front and a little bit warm at the back, and slightly lacking the necessary heart in the middle. For my taste better to have picked a couple of days earlier. Tasted: November 2020" 91-94 pts, Jasper Morris MW
