Dugat-Py Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle Vieilles Vignes

One of the top domaines in Burgundy, Dugat-Py also has one of the most impressive and extensive cellars in the region, originally built in 11th century for the Abbey of Saint Benigné in Dijon. Loïc Dugat, now 13th generation, is continuing the family tradition of making some of the greatest and most sought-after wines in Burgundy, from the family’s eleven hectares of perfectly-sited vineyards, planted with vines averaging nearly seventy years old. Everything is done by hand, while a horse is used to plough a few of the vineyards. The domaine has been fully organic since 2003, with Loïc now working biodynamically across a number of sites. The wines are vinified with as little intervention as possible and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Since 2017 the use of new oak has been reduced which really allows the quality of these sites and the character of the old vine fruit to shine through from barrel. Under Loic’s stewardship and with a string of superb vintages, Dugat-Py is now firly back in the front rank of Burgundy’s top domaines. These are not inexpensive wines but if you consider that the village level “Vielles Vignes” and “Coeur du Roy” are better than most grower’s 1er Crus, whilst Dugat-Py’s 1er Crus are more thrilling than a lot of others’ Grand Crus then it helps put purchases in perspective.
"Elegant, pressed violets, sweet raspberry pastille and deeper cherry note on the nose Deft, mouthwatering, all white stones and bright red fruits on the palate, juicy yet chiselled and with great energy, like smoke in the mouth, quite forward already – this is absolutely gorgeous and the most charming of the wines tried from the domaine." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
"The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru was picked on the first day of harvest, along with the Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères. Containing 50% whole bunch, it is very perfumed on the nose, the most floral of Dugat-Py’s Premier Crus, but thankfully the gushing violet and peony aromas do not obscure the fruit expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, more understated than I anticipated after the aromatics. This ends up a streamlined Petite Chapelle of wonderful delineation and salinity (though maybe the Champeaux has a little more complexity overall at this early juncture). Not so Petite!" 92-94 pts, Neal Martin, Vinous
"Some of it Leroy-style with shoots rolled not trimmed but the vines stayed green. Part of their work has been to keep vines green. From 2018 they serve Petite-Chapelle after Lavaut. Cask sample. Real breadth and completeness on the nose. Pretty dry finish. Needs a lot of time. Lots of tannin and matière – very youthful. Grand cru density but not the charm of the Lavaut." 17.5 pts, Jancis Robinson
"I was surprised when Loïc Dugat-Py opted to present his 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle after the domaine's Lavaux Saint-Jacques; but when I tasted the wine, I immediately understood his decision. Offering up an incipiently complex bouquet of wild berries, raspberries, blood orange and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, built around velvety tannins and lively acids. Standing out for its completeness, energy and length, this is the finest Petite Chapelle I've ever tasted from the domaine, and I can't wait to revisit it in bottle." 93-95+ pts, William Kelley, Wine Advocate
