Edouard Delaunay Nuits Saint Georges
Over the hills and far away to the Haut Cotes…. And a kaleidoscopic tasting with Laurent Delaunay at the family’s beautiful Chateau de Charmont. 28 wines tried – from Bourgogne Aligoté (absolutely outstanding – who needs Chardonnay?!?) right through to Echezeaux and Clos Vougeot, with many highlights across appellations and crus. The choice of parcels, and pragmatic approach – where every cuvée is treated individually without a set formula for quantity of new oak, or amount of whole bunches used etc, allows each wine to offer a true and deeply satisfying expression of the terroirs. Whilst the strength in Nuits Saint Georges is especially noticeable, there are some absolute gems throughout – and the consistent balance of succulence and focus, sweetness and salinity, authenticity and sophistication shows that there are great things ahead for Maison Delaunay. Watch out for Laurent picking some of his top under the radar wines for us and elsewhere explaining why we should embrace his passion for Nuits Saint Georges…
" The heart of Maison Delaunay belongs in Nuits – they are looking offer an increasing number of crus to show off the appellation – so it’s good to see how confident the village wine is. The style of wines from the northern and southern vineyards are quite different and this wine is from three sites – one from north and two from south. 60% of the cuvée is from a lieu dit nestled just underneath ‘Les Saint Georges’ – the village’s most illustrious premier Cru (and long viewed by many as deserving of Grand Cru status). 30% new oak used. Quite a deep, velvety nose, that tantalisingly promises more to come. At the moment there is spice and smoke, and sour cherries and cranberries, and a bouquet garni whiff. The palate is generous and ample with chocolatey sweet fruit - so much cherry, almost kirsh. However there is surprising sophistication and minerality to the tannins that bind up all the fruit, as extremely succulent as it is, and it’s good to observe a lick of salt, like sweat on a brow, once the richly fruit-led finish starts to subside." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
"One plot to the north and two south of Nuits. Lively purple without the black. Much fresher bouquet, 30% new wood does not show, this is lively and exciting. Good acidity also in the mouth, dancing red fruits, really very well done and very persistent. Tasted: October 2020" 90-93 pts, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
