Like a phoenix from the ashes, the story of House Delaunay's revival attracted considerable attention and excitement back in 2017. We were confident that the House would live up to the hype, but they have even exceeded our wildest expectations for them!

The house of Delaunay, founded in 1893, has a prestigious history and was renowned as one of the exclusive distributors of DRC (Domaine de la Romanée-Conti) and La Romanée until the 1940s. In the 1990s, it was sold to Jean Claude Boisset. However, in 2017, winemaker and fifth-generation family member Laurent Delaunay repurchased the name, winery, and cellars adjacent to the family home, Chateau de Chaumont, leading to the revival of the maison.

Laurent, along with his wife Catherine, has gained access to excellent vineyard sites across the Cote d'Or in Burgundy. Their vineyards include remarkable locations such as Petit-Vougeots and Griottes-Chambertin. Laurent's dedication to quality winemaking has been recognized, as evidenced by Christophe Briotet, the head winemaker, being awarded the International Wine Challenge (IWC) Red Winemaker of the Year in 2019, White Winemaker of the Year in 2020, and again Red Winemaker of the Year in 2021. Moreover, Laurent himself was confirmed as the President of the BIVB (Burgundy Wine Board) in the previous year.

As such we feel especially privileged to work so closely with Laurent and Christophe, where we have been able to offer Club Members shares in barrels of Hospice de Beaune & Nuits elaborated by Delaunay, alongside exclusive 1er Crus and other superb Burgundies.

The Wine

Under Laurent Delaunay's stewardship, the wines of House Delaunay have soared to great heights. Their remarkable 2019 vintage garnered significant attention and accolades, particularly at the IWC 2020 awards, where they emerged as the biggest winner. The maison received eight trophies, including the prestigious Red Winemaker of the Year for their talented head winemaker, Christophe Briotet. In addition to the impressive trophies, they earned 15 gold, 30 silver, and 7 bronze medals.

Delaunay's range of wines encompasses esteemed Burgundy appellations, including Corton-Charlemagne, Clos Vougeot, and Chambertin Grand Crus. The wines have been highly praised by Club Members and the Honest Grapes team, who have been enjoying Laurent's creations throughout the year. With their commitment to excellence and remarkable vineyard sources, House Delaunay has regained its prominence in the world of Burgundy wines.
