Hearty Red

Canaiolo, Sangiovese

An organic, very traditionally-made and attractively rustic Chianti from the Colli Fiorentini sub-district along the banks of the Arno.

The family (of aristocratic Polish descent) are starting to practice biodynamism, and use only native Tuscan grapes - 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo Nero to give colour and herbal spiciness, fermented naturally and aged only in concrete tanks. This yields a fresh, earthy, crunchy Chianti designed for early drinking that is a versatile match with the full range of Tuscan trattoria dishes.

Fattoria di Sammontana

This is a classic young Chianti: fresh and lively, light and medium bodied.

This is a powerful and rustic Chianti which develops in the glass over several hours. Notes of shrubbery and brooding fruit on the nose lead to a more evolved and pleasant dried rose petal aroma after a while. The wine is similarly structured, with an almost iron backbone. But it’s a wonderful introduction to the rustic charms of Tuscany – a far cry from the sanitised cherry juice you’ll find in the supermarkets.

Fattoria di Sammontana

The vineyards of Fattoria di Sammontana slope gently down the hill that borders the eastern side of the Arno valley, in Montelup Fiorentino, just 20km from Florence. The soil is full of stones, gravel and pebbles of various sizes, and is known as “ungrateful” but it’s this soil that gives character and personality to the wines.

It all started nearly 150 years ago when the Polish nobleman Michele Dzieduszycki (try saying that after a couple of glasses) moved his family from the imperial court at Vienna, to Tuscany and started making wine.

Andrea, the fourth generation, has now taken the reigns at the property and he's already started to implement some changes. Organic and biodynamic trials are continuing throughout their 13 hectares. They now produce a range of 7 different wines.
