Gaja Ca'Marcanda, Camarcanda 2018

Gaja Ca'Marcanda, Camarcanda 2018

Angelo Gaja could have rested on his laurels as undisputed king of Barbaresco, having revolutionised winemaking not just in Piedmont, but Italy as a whole. Having put Barbaresco on the international stage, he felt compelled to risk staring something completely new further south in Tuscany.
Angelo’s great ability to foresee and comprehend terroirs, had him drawn to a unique plot in Bolgheri. It would take a further 18 trips to complete the negotiations in 1996 for a historic 100ha estate just south of the iconic Tenuta dell’Ornellaia.
Aptly named as “Ca’marcanda” – the house of endless negotiations - the family set about planting international grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah) and building a state-of-the-art, eco-efficient winery of architectural brilliance, that blends into its surroundings effortlessly.
Bolgheri requires little introduction as its wines are known the world over for their unique combination of opulence, ripeness, freshness and spicy notes, bearing the hallmarks of both Old and New World styles. Gaja’s grasp of the terroir and expertise in producing elegant, refined wines takes these qualities to the next level in his most recent edition, 2018.
