Villa Sparina Gavi di Gavi

Gavi, Piedmont, Italy

Crisp White

Villa Sparina has 100 hectares of land, of which 70 are cultivated with indigenous grapes; particularly dedicated to Cortese and Barbera. The vineyards benefit from excellent and varied soils, enjoying optimal sun exposure and the mild, temperate climate of southern Piedmont.

The Gavi di Gavi is a great classic obtained from the Cortese grapes, a lively, fresh and fruity white. The unusual and beautiful amphora-shaped bottle also makes it an excellent gift and a fun bottle to bring to the dinner party.

Villa Sparina

The flagship Gavi, in its distinctive amphora-shaped bottle has a straw-yellow colour and fragrance of white flowers with hints of peach. The palate is drier than the nose suggests, almost chalky but full and complex with balancing acidity.

When I had this with friends, it was the shape of the bottle that people commented on first. This is a crisp, weighty Gavi that doesn't disappoint. Best with grilled or baked fish.

Villa Sparina

Villa Sparina is a family estate in the Gavi district of Piedmont, an area that has specialised in growing Barbera and Dolcetto and most notably the white grape Cortese for more than 1,000 years. Owned by the Moccagatta family, this fantastic estate regularly produces the finest expressions of these grapes and can now promote its wines through its Michelin-starred restaurant La Gallina and Ostelliere, its boutique hotel, both situated in its sumptous grounds.
