The Argonne cuvée is the epitome of Giraud’s expertise and research, created only in exceptional vintages: a true tête de cuvée. 2012 is an extremely fine wine.

“A sort of Montrachet of Champagne!” - Jancis Robinson MW

"Claude makes wonderfully rich caressing wines with classic hazelnut-scented village character." - Richard Juhlin

“some of the most unique, individualistic wines in Champagne… At their best, the Giraud Champagnes offer incredible intensity, class and balance.” - Antonio Galloni

Named for the forest where the house sources the oak for its bespoke barrels – Argonne is the flagship wine of Champagne Henri Giraud. Robert Parker has said that it “resembles the top cuvées from Krug [with] more freshness” – indeed the rich, ripe quality of this champagne is married with stunning clarity and finesse.

The Argonne cuvée is the epitome of Giraud’s expertise and research, created only in exceptional vintages: a true tête de cuvée. 2012 is an extremely fine wine, being made in this vintage of 90% Pinot Noir with 10% of Chardonnay from a superb plot of 50 year old vines on Aÿ Grand Cru chalk soils situated in glorious elevation above the winery. Harvesting of these vines is done entirely by hand, before fermentation and ageing in 228 litre barrels of Argonne oak specially selected for its terroir. The toasting of the barrels is personally overseen by the Henri Giraud chef de cave, Sebastien Le Golvet, at the dedicated Henri Giraud cooperage. 30% of the barrels are new, lending a balancing depth and density to the gorgeous richness of the Pinot Noir fruit. Argonne rests in bottle for 9 years before its release with 7.5g of dosage, creating a sumptuous yet very elegant, precisely defined champagne of stunning mineral purity and great ageing potential. Less than 5000 bottles were produced.

“This is an extraordinary, hand-crafted Champagne with aromas of strawberries, spice, dried apples, clementines and subtle bread dough. Dried oranges, too. Full-bodied, yet so tight, compact and powerful with a solid core of fruit and a finish that goes on forever. 90% pinot noir and 10% chardonnay, all from the village of Ay and fermented and aged in new wood for 15 months. Then aged in bottle. Superb structure and complexity. One for the cellar.” 99 pts, James Suckling

“The bouquet is simply sumptuous with hints of mint and anise, overlying its 'al dente' or slightly crunchy white fruit, along with an enticing grace note of gentle spices. On the palate, the texture is fleshy, almost creamy, but perfectly balanced with remarkable overall precision, and enlivened by the stream of very fine bubbles. A great Champagne that manages the rare feat of having a style that is both vinous and delicate.” 98 pts, Decanter
