Henschke Henry's Seven
- Barossa Valley, Australia
This Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Viognier blend is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony. Following Henry’s death in 1868, his widow Sarah exercised her temperance convictions by closing the winery and uprooting all the winegrapes. This blend highlights the historical introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to South Australia in those early pioneering days and reflects the history, religion and culture of the Barossa.
The Henschke estate practises biodynamic farming: "I would like to see the next generation inherit a fertile and sustainable land. Using the principles of biodynamics and organics enables me to create the best environment for plant growth."
"A very attractive array of ripe blackberry that speaks tot he two-thirds shiarz component here, redder grenache perfume and some spicy allure. The palate's supple, fleshy and succulent with a ball of smooth glossy dark berry and plum flavour. Drink or hold.." 93/100, James Suckling
"Spice, tea and dried herb notes make for an aromatic opening to the core of tight berry, cherry and cranberry relish flavors. Detailed and aromatic through to the end, which shows precision and elegance." 92/100, Wine Spectator
"A bit more aromatic and vibrant than the 2015, the 2016 Henry's Seven is a blend of 66% Shiraz, 15% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and 9% Viognier. Medium-bodied, plump and mouthwatering, it showcases attractive notes of cherries and stone fruit, with just a touch of savory black olive. It should drink well for at least 6-7 years." 91/100, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate
