Italy meets France in this early Summer playoff of wines to help you jump into June and early Summer picnics.

Italy meets France in this early Summer playoff of wines to help you jump into June and early Summer picnics. The Italian team shows its’ character and sense of Roman history with names derived from foxes, elephants and a Greek goddess. In contrast, the French team displays classical elegance and passion with two wines from Bordeaux and a supple beautiful star from the Languedoc. This month’s Wine Club cases are available as all-red, all-white, or mixed. And as a guest appearance, we have secured a few cases of a classy rosé from Southern France, produced by the famous Cazes family.

The Italian Team

Elephas Bianco, Castello di Torre (white, Lazio): This crisp, dry white from Lazio near Rome comes from cellars carved out of stone over 500 years ago. The elephant on the label signifies the fossils found in the vineyard which is by a Roman road. It’s redolent of citrus, almonds and white peaches on the nose, with a bright, attractive and savoury palate with a hint of salinity that makes it perfect with salads, fish and soft cheeses.

Terre Siciliano Grillo, Volpi (white, Sicily): From the volcanic island of Sicily, this fine white is named after Era, from the Greek name of Diana, Goddess of Nature. It has a straw yellow colour, with fine and elegant aromas of grapefruit and citrus blossom. On the palate there is an abundance of citrus fruit and a nice minerality.

Valpolicella Volpare, La Giaretta (red, Veneto): No ordinary Valpolicella here, the husband and wife team of Francesco and Francesca believe in making quality Venetian wines and it really shows in the end product. “Volpare” in Italian is the area where foxes go to hide. A top example of the lighter-styled Valpolicella. Really lively floral and cherry nose. On the palate it is wonderfully light and velvety, with bright fruit and great acidity (the secret to this is that they use small percentage of Passito (dried) grapes, just under 10%, for concentration that makes it a cut above). Simply the best wine with a proper pizza, and as a change from Pinot Noir try this with white meats too.

The French team

Chateau Haut Rian blanc (white, Bordeaux): This lovely family estate was founded by Pauline Dietrich's father Michel in the medieval village of Rions in the area known as Premières Côtes de Bordeaux. They make fresh, approachable wines to Terra Vitis and Bee Friendly environmental standards. This quaffable white Bordeaux comes from two plots nestled in a hillside in Soulignac, in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers area of Bordeaux. The nose of sunny white flowers, lemon, lime zest and grass leads to a mouth-watering crisp and refreshing palate perfect for salads, light fish dishes and cheeseboards. The fruity but dry nature of the Sauvignon Blanc is enriched by the richness and texture of the Sémillon. Don’t drink this over-chilled, it really opens up when it's been in the glass for a few minutes. A perfect 'vin de soif' for a lunchtime picnic.

Chateau Lacroix (red, Bordeaux): Named after the stone cross at the entrance to Château Teyssier, Lacroix is a Merlot-driven early-drinking Bordeaux Superieur. This should be served at room temperature and enjoyed on its own, alternatively, with lunch or dinner. It’s deep red, with a ruby rim. On the nose, it shows brambles, redcurrants, liquorice, a hint of vanilla followed by menthol, spice and earthy notes. The palate displays crunchy red fruit, round tannins over a firm backbone.

Belle Etoile Merlot (red, Pays d’Oc): With a label and style inspired by the memorable brasseries and cabarets of Paris in the 1920’s, this is a ‘beautiful star’ of a wine, showing lovely structure and supple tannins perfect for spring picnics. It’s plump and juicy, with a touch of spice on the finish.
