A small boutique wine grower that produces hand crafted natural wines from small plots of vineyards in the south coast region of South Africa.
Johan, a rising star of the new South African wine scene, developed strong relationships with some of the best grape-growers across the Cape over the years, and as a result he has gained access to some of the region’s best fruit. The company was established in 2011, with 2012 seeing the first bottling from these artistic wines. Driven by nature and “terroir” the wines show unique flavours and characteristics of the land it was grown on. Noticing a gap in the UK market for artisanal, well-made South African Chenin at an accessible price, they decided to use this fruit to create the first Force Majeure. The success of this wine has given way to two new additions to the Force Majeure line: a Cinsault Rosé and a Red Blend made up of Syrah, Pinotage, Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan and Mourvedre, both produced with the same principles as the original.
Recently, they’ve also started working on new wines under the ‘Mother Rock’ label (a collaboration between Johan and Indigo founder Ben Henshaw), focusing on discovering exceptional parcels of well-farmed vines grown on a variety of soil types and vinified as simply as possible. These are terroir-focused wines made to offer drinkability and enjoyment, and it doesn’t hurt that the labels are beautiful. Ultimately, Mother Rock is about showcasing the best and purest expression of South Africa’s diverse terroir.
What to drink with... barbecue.
Always harder to prepare than they look, when done well barbecues are a real event. The more succulent the meat, the more tannic the wine. If you’re easily distracted and have to hide those burnt edges under the parsley, then go for a smooth wine. Barbecues tend to be social occasions and your guests are more likely to enjoy your company than analyse the wines. If this sounds familiar, pick a crowd pleaser like our Côtes du Rhône Régulus Rouge, the Antucura Intuition Malbec from Argentina or our Alpha Domus The Pilot Merlot Cabernet from NZ. If the sun is burning hot, why not pick a fruity, refreshing rosé? Hope the sun shines for you!
