Tommaso Cortonesi’s grandfather bought La Mannella in the 1970s. The estate spreads over 56 hectares, eight of which produce Brunello di Montalcino. The major vineyard is around the winery at La Mannella, just north of Montalcino itself, but there is another vineyard near Castelnuovo dell’ Abate, to the south east of the town. Originally just one Brunello was made, a blend from the two separate vineyards, but in the 1990s, Tommaso and his father realised that the two vineyards had distinctly different soil composition. They decided that better wine would be made if each terroir was properly realised in the bottle, and thus were born Poggiarelli (in the south east) and La Mannella (in the north).

Poggiarelli has rocky soil, rich in marl, whereas at La Mannella it is mainly clay and limestone. Poggiarelli is at about 420 m.a.s.l and La Mannella is 280-350 m.a.s.l. The oldest vines were planted in 1983, and another two plots were planted in 1998. All their wines are 100% Sangiovese

"Good full red. Blueberry, red cherry, sweet pipe tobacco, minerals and spices on the nose, lifted by notes of violet and white pepper. Features terrific inner-mouth tension to the sappy crushed fruit flavors. This is richer, denser and deeper than Cortonesi’s 2013 Brunello, but is every bit as vibrant and silky, though clearly also more backward. Finishes long and precise, featuring ripe tannins and subtly complex notes of red fruit, game and saline, smoky underbrush. "Compared to the wine from the La Mannella site (with fruit from the northern part of the appellation), the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli is assembled with fruit located in the warmer southeastern quadrant of the region. You can immediately tell the difference between these two Brunellos. This expression is slightly softer, richer and shows even more volume. I am slightly partial to the La Mannella wine because it feels tighter and firmer. But this is a significant beauty as well. The oak aging between the two wines also differs. This version ages in tonneaux for two years, and the other wine goes into large oak casks for three years. This is the modern wine that is the classic Brunello. 'Express Delivery' (Free Next Day Delivery) is available for orders over £75 placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday. Orders over £75 but placed after 1pm will still benefit from 'Fast & Free Delivery', and will revert to an estimated 1-3 working days. For orders under £75, 'Fast Delivery' is charged at £12.50, arriving in an estimated 1-3 working days.

London Same Day Delivery is available to most London postcodes as listed in our T&Cs, if ordered by 11am Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). For orders over £75 London Same Day, delivery is charged at £15. For orders under £75 London Same Day, delivery is charged at £27.50. If ordered after 11am, you will receive your order on the next working day. We may be able to organise a speedy courier for you, so please call or email us if you have special requests. Saturday Delivery costs £30. This option is available to all UK mainland postcodes for orders placed between 1pm on Thursday and 1pm on Friday. This is optional at checkout, to be chosen in place of our standard 1 – 3 working day service. If you specifically need to place an order for Saturday delivery outside of the above times, please contact us at and we will see if we can arrange this for you.

Our Club Offers may take longer to ship, as we collect all of our members’ orders together before ordering them from the winemaker. The expected delivery timelines for each product should be specified on the product page. Otherwise, please contact us for the information.
