Spain has over 400 grape varieties planted all over the country but just 20 varietals produce 80% of wine made. The most common cultivars for red wine are: Tempranillo, Garnacha (adopted by the French and called Grenache) and Monstrell (known internationally as Mourvèdre). White grape varieties include Albariño, Palomino, Airen and Macabeo.
Most famous regions are Rioja and Ribera del Duero not forgetting Jerez where the fortified sherry is made. Spain is also famous for its sparkling wine, Cava, made in Catalonia.
