Weingut am Stein Stettener Stein Silvaner VDP Grosses Gewachs
"...a very weighty and attractive food wine at Grand Cru level"
Weingut am Stein's Grosses Gewachs (GG) wines are from the Stettener Stein, which lies along the river Main approximately 20 km downstream from Würzburg. Stetten has a very long tradition in Viticulture and the Stettener Stein vineyard is one of the oldest in the Franconian wine region.
Hand harvesting, cool fermentation and a long maturing period on the fine yeast results in wines of fine complex fruit and a delicate acidity. The wines show a youthful freshness and vivacity with the ability to age. Vinification is in steel tanks, concrete eggs, amphora and a few wines see small French barriques.
The nose begins with that lovely smoky note and white flowers so redolent of the Stettener Stein. The palate is bone dry, with fresh acidity and depth of fruit – very weighty! The finish has somewhat fruitier notes and some sea salt making this a very weighty and attractive food wine at Grand Cru level.
"2016 - a wine year without borders: Herbal perfume, slightly bitter, very dynamic with a clear pointed style. Everything comes together. Perfect acidity."

"Let's start with Franken this year - the 2016 Silvaner and Rieslings are brilliant. Ludwig Knoll is at the top, but who is still even wondering? The wines from Weingut am Stein are leading. The Silvaner and the Riesling from Stettener Stein are very expressive, complex, salty and of great length."

"The GG Silvaner from the Stettener STEIN by Ludwig Knoll (Am Stein) has an extraordinary nose. Completely different than everyone else. Some tar, a touch of burnt rubber (Burgundy), some quince. Everything totally fascinating in the mouth, as well as taut, slim and trained. I picture a 400 meter runner - trained and muscular, but not exaggeratedly muscular. Nothing is inflated. The wine is almost endless in the palate and pulls me away. Great!"
