Luke says...

First off, a delicious Crémant – 100% Chardonnay, 18 months on the lees, perfect Friday night stuff that will do well to survive past the evening I get it home.

Sticking with Chardonnay, a bottle of England’s finest that will maybe ease the travel-ban anxiety a little. Really impressive, zippy, whilst ripe enough to carry a touch of mature barrel spice.

Over to the other side of the world for a typically unconventional Chenin from South Africa that just works. Perfect for when you’re looking for some thirst-quenching apéritif, light but energetic!

For the reds, back to France (with more than a touch of Aussie influence) and one of the unsung heroes from one of our favourite stars of Burgundy. This Chénas is exactly what people are talking about when they say Beaujolais can be exciting, intriguing and serious, while remaining fun and fresh. Will be saved for a warmer, sunny day when I’ll pop it open after about 45 minutes in the fridge.

Next up, Californian sunshine with Burgundian sensibilities; Gavin is making outstanding site-specific Pinots that are juicy, bright, floral, spicy and savoury all at the same time. Made as naturally as possible in the cooler than-one-might-imagine Santa Barbara County, owing to a combination of altitude and cooling coastal winds, ideal for when looking for a dinner time treat.

Finally, back to the old world with a classic from Tuscany. Great quality Montepulciano is still a bargain compared to many other wines from the region, and this is a great example of exactly that. Ideal with all the meaty Tuscan staples you’d imagine, but I will probably be saving for the second half of an early evening Sunday roast when I want to indulge my contemplative side... just a few ideas there, but plenty of time to think on!
