Clemens Busch Marienburg Riesling VDP Felsterrasse GG
- Mosel, Germany
"From 90-year-old vines on gray slate, the 2016 Pündericher Marienburg Riesling "Felsterrasse" shows a pure, fresh and mineral nose with perfectly ripe and concentrated but not overly fruity mirabelle aromas. Full-bodied but with great finesse and elegance, this is a gorgeously salty, seemingly weightless and filigreed Riesling of mind-blowing complexity. The finish is enormously salty, precise and fresh. The 2016 is almost lean but terribly complex and elegant. A great, great dry Riesling from the Mosel."
98/100 Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate (Feb-2018)
The charming and self-effacing couple of Clemens and his wife Rita have gained a cult following over the past three decades for their laser-sharp, richly textured and terroir defined wines.
Riesling is the king of grapes, the Mosel its most illustrious terrain and so produces its ultimate expression. Nowhere in the world is the identification of vine, winemaker and produce more precisely defined, and nowhere have we found Rieslings to compare with these. These newly released reserve wines represent the pinnacle of Clemens Busch’s crop. The original grapes from these special terraces within the Marienburg impart characteristics which are terrain-specific based on the underlying geology. In our tastings, these wines show remarkable differences across just a few metres distance between the vines. Truly ‘wines of place’.
In the sweet versus dry debate, it’s worth noting that Clemens only uses natural yeasts, preferring each wine to find its perfect balance in each vintage.
