Honest Grapes - Mullineux
Established barely over a decade ago in 2007 by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, the winery is now one of the most decorated and revered in not just South Africa, but arguably the entire New World. Mullineux work with a close network of key growers in the Swartland whose terroirs are composed of granite and schist, just like the great appellations of the Northern Rhone, and indeed Mullineux' top single vineyard wines are regularly compared to the illustrious wines of Cote Rotie. Several parcels are farmed biodynamically, with minimal intervention in the vineyard and barely the faintest hint of sulphur in the cellar. This leads to wines of quite breathtaking elegance and precision, with gorgeous perfume allied to a rounder, fuller body that stays true to the warm South African climate. Intellectual yet hedonic, they are enjoyable young but absolutely have the stucture for long-term cellaring. In short, these are utterly fabulous wines that will appeal not just to South African aficinados but to any serious lover of great wine in general.
