98-point Brunello 2010 En Primeur
From our Wine Director, Tom Harrow:
I have been vociferously enthusing about 2010 Brunello since tasting variously in 2011 and 2012 from barrel (also see my How to Spend It - Divino Tuscany report). James Suckling stole a march on other wine writers (much to their chagrin) and organised a pre-release December tasting of this recently-bottled vintage of the millennium, giving the expected stratospheric scores which have made it impossible to wait any longer to mention as buyers are now jostling for allocations.
If you know me in real life, the chances that in the last two years I have not mentioned in conversation my own excitement about the vintage are slim to non-existent. Below are some other opinions for your consideration…
“2010 for Brunello di Montalcino is the greatest modern vintage of Italy’s most famous red wine region.” James Suckling
“The best vintage I have experienced in my winemaking career and I started making wine in the early 1980s." Giacomo Neri, Casanova di Neri
“Incredibly attractive when young but also structured and beautiful for ageing. They will be the new standard in quality to judge all Brunello.” Vincenzo Abruzzese, Valdicava
Our good friends at Mastrojanni, down in the south in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, have received an astonishing 98 points for their 2010 (a wine we are offering en primeur for just £35 a bottle in bond!). Quality and price are beyond reproach, the sting is that 2010 was a below average-sized vintage and demand next year will be absolutely through the roof.
To that end, we are offering cases en primeur ex-chateau linked to purchases of the hotter, juicier, immediately gluggable 2009. One for table, one for cellar (or for investment if you are sensible enough to buy sufficient cases to satisfy you own demands as well as the market).
12 bottles 2009 Brunello di Montalcino (90 points WS, JS) – for drinking now-2020
12 bottles 2010 Brunello di Montalcino (98 points JS) – for extended cellaring 24 bottles £840 In Bond.
As this wine is offered in bond (rather than available immediately), we have not made it available for purchase through the website. If you would like to order, please email me on firstname.lastname@example.org, or give us a ring in the office on 020 3603 1646.
NB: half cases are available (linked 1:1 as above) but frankly you really should be buying 12 of each. The wines will be shipped from Mastrojanni in April, however we have some duty paid 2009 in stock for immediate delivery for the impatient and thirsty.
NB 2: 2009 is not generally available in the UK and 2010 has not officially been released and will sell out immediately in January when it is, and for a lot more than we are offering.
NB 3: There will be more to come in the new year with the knowledge that our other Brunello producer – Valdicava, scored 99 points for their basic Brunello 2010 (released Spring 2015) and 6 wines received 100 points from JS. A betting man would lay short odds on Mastrojanni’s single vineyard Loreta and Reserva Schiena d’Asino and Valdicava’s Madonna al Piano being favourites for perfect scores... Takers for the offer above will be front of the inevitably long queue for allocations of all these highly sought after wines – for whom we are the official UK channel.
