Bordeaux En Primeur Week 5 in Review
This week has been the busiest week of Bordeaux En Primeur releases seen so far this vintage. After a brief hiatus last week, without a peep from Bordeaux, this week we saw handfuls of wines released every day. We've passed on at least half of them as they have been insufficient value.
Highlights include Cos d'Estournel and Pichon Lalande, both of which were snapped up by those who had selected them in their pre-allocations. Luckily, we were able to secure a few extra cases of these top-scoring wines, so there are still a few remaining in stock. Troplong Mondot was released yesterday, stunning the market with a 30% reduction from 2016 prices along with critical acclaim to match. Vinous' Galloni awarded Troplong with 95-98 points and commented that it's "easily one of the wines of the vintage".
Please find below our summary of Bordeaux 2017s released to date that are still available:
Smith Haut Lafitte 2017 £822/ 12 IB
94-97 AG, 95-96 JS “…easily one of the highlights of the vintage… This is a super impressive showing from Smith Haut Lafitte” AG
11% down on 2016 price
Lynch Bages 2017 £888/ 12 IB “a wine of impeccable balance and class” AG
95-96 JS, 95 Decanter
Equally/better scored than 2015 and 26% lower than 2016 (which is scored equally by Galloni!)
Troplong Mondot 2017 £864/ 12 IB
95-98 AG, 95-97 WA
In “Ten Most Exciting Wines of 2017” AG
At a fantastic 30% below the 2016 release price this has to be one of the best bargains of the Right Bank and sees the new owners of Troplong pushing the property to the very forefront of St Emilion. This is very highly recommended.
Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 2017 £495/ 6 IB
96-98+ WA, 96-97 JS
“The 2017 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is magnificent” AG
Glowing reviews from all and my white wine of the vintage
Pichon Lalande 2017 £552/ 6 IB
95-96 JS, 94-96WA
“Showing character of some of the top years of the 1980s” JS
One of my very favourite wines of the vintage and 22% reduction on the similarly scored 2016, this was completely sold out within half an hour of release.
Pichon Baron 2017 £588/ 6 IB
“…will compete with the best of the best in 2017” Jeb Dunnock
95-97 WA, 93-96+ AG
13% below 2016
Cos d’Estournel 2017 £654/ 6 IB
97-100 WA, 97-98 JS
"Something of a miracle in modern times... Truly profound" WA
One of WA’s top three rated reds of the vintage (potential perfect scores) at 8% less than the exactly same scored (by WA, JS & AG) 2016 which has already improved in price by 17% prior to bottling. For investors there is a potential 25%+ upside on this wine…
