Napa Valley Barrel Crowdfunding Syndicate with Jonathan Maltus

Our latest Club Special Project is taking you over the Atlantic and across the US to Napa Valley where we have once again joined forces with our good friend Jonathan Maltus and his award-winning 100-point winemaking team to crowdfund barrels of an illustrious single vineyard Napa Cab! Having finalised the last few details, I'm delighted to announce that we will be buying barrels of the exceptional 2019 vintage which Jonathan and I have selected especially.

Since 1996 Jonathan has produced a selection of critically rated single vineyard wines and pioneered the famous garagiste movement of the Right Bank, culminating in a Robert Parker 100-point score for his flagship wine Le Dôme. Back in 2008, Jonathan set out to buy some land in California but soon discovered he could source outstanding grapes instead, especially from Andy Beckstoffer. Over the next decade, Jonathan and his team have produced a range of tiny production, garagiste style fine wines under his World’s End label from Napa and particularly from Beckstoffer Vineyards.

There is no better winemaker than Jonathan to take us on this exciting journey; no better vineyard than one of the jewels in the crown of the Beckstoffer vineyards, Missouri Hopper, situated just up the road from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars in Oakville and the source of multiple 100-point scores; and no better vintage than 2019, hailed by all major publications and critics as a landmark for Napa. Indeed, Paul Hobbs, the "Steve Jobs of Wine" according to Forbes, boldly claims that “2019 will be even more refined [than 2018] with better purity and better precision. It will be the best of the decade. The 2019s are sensational".

So, how does it all work? This opportunity allows you to buy ‘shares’ in a barrel of Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Cabernet Sauvignon. Each barrel contains 300 bottles and each full share consists of 24 bottles. The barrels are still in the US and after bottling and further maturation, we expect them to be shipped to you in Spring 2022. When they arrive we can transfer them to your chosen storage facility or private address and will be in touch at that point to arrange with you.

"Spiced plums, creamed blackberries, currant, cherry Bakewell tart, tamarind and dark chocolate, with hints of graphite, smoked meat and polish. 24-hrs later humidor scents - sandalwood and Cohibas - develop, alongside salted liquorice, cloves, soy, and sour cherry notes.

Wow - a really satisfying palate with waves of flavour from the bright, sappy and vivid cherry-accented and fig attack which fills out laterally to the sweetly rich fruitcake and Christmas spice mid-palate but tapers impressively to a succulent and juicy but fresh and salty, anise-inflected finish. This really shapes well. Voluptuous and opulent but with poise and tension, the fruit is plush, creamy and ample yet their is no excess weight, instead it dances on the tongue, steered by sculpted tannins which, despite their satiny smoothness, contain real steel at their core. There is lively vein of acidity too that gives the wine a real pulse. Plenty of drama here to balance the density.

Jonathan has said in the past he has a reputation for making "New World wines in the Old World and Old Wines in the New World". I think the distinction in today's wine landscape is far more blurred but nevertheless if this slipped into a line-up of 2018 or 2020's top St Julien classified growths - I'm thinking Ducru Beaucaillou and especially Leoville Poyferré, it would be right at home..." Tom Harrow, Wine Director

Some of the most memorable projects we've offered include crowdfunding syndicates for barrels of Hospices de Beaune & Nuit, as well as a barrel of Jane Eyre Charmes-Chambertin, all of which have been sell-out successes, so now it will be fascinating to take you to one of Napa's finest vineyards for the next chapter. We have three specially selected barrels so if you would to join the syndicate, please let us know as soon as possible as shares are unlikely to hang around for long!

UPDATE 22nd August: We now have less than half of the final barrel left to offer.
