Priorat’s Finest, Points Abounding…
From our wine director, Tom Harrow:
The other week at a tasting Nathan and I met winemaker Ester Nin, one of the stars of Priorat – responsible not only for I Terrasses Clos Erasmus (a back to back 100-point scorer in 04 and 05!) but also, with husband Carlos, their fabulous and amazing value Nit de Nin wines nearby. It’s hard to think of more fashionable and sought after fine wines than Priorat currently – and alongside Rene Berbier (Clos Mogador) and Alvaro Palacios (Ermita), Daphne Glorian (proprietor of I Terrasses) is at the cutting edge of Spain’s wine revolution.
Tom talks Priorat
The king grape here is Garnacha (Grenache) which is one of the few varieties that continues to be productive at 70+ years old, enabling old vine wines of unrivalled complexity and wisdom.
The Clos Erasmus 2012 is up there with the estate’s top vintages and we have a limited quantity of this iconic wine (barely 100 cases are made) which aside from being phenomenal juice has considerable investment potential as one would expect from a wine that has scored an AVERAGE of 97.5 points(!) across the last 10 vintages.
We were also really taken with the second wine – Laurel 2012 which, from the estate’s younger vines, offers sensational value (at £29.20 a bottle) and drinks like a Latin-tinged Chateauneuf-du-Pape. We thought it would be fun to offer this as part of a mixed case with Ester and Carlos’ Nit de Nin wines which we reckon are tipped to become the next big thing in the region.
The blend in both the Nit and second wines Planetes is dominated by old vine Garnacha (70+ years) and the vineyards, next to the hillside village of Porrera benefit from the elevation, cooling breezes and also north and east-facing slopes that ensure the wines retain a freshness and acidity to balance their considerable weight of intensely ripe, spicy fruit. Reminiscent of maturing Barolo, the wines are made biodynamically and using whole bunch fermentation (in the top wine), offering a different, more subtle expression of Garnacha to I Terrasses but every bit as compelling. Nit de Nin 2011 (94 points WA) works out as £49.80 a bottle which for a wine of this quality is remarkable and Planetes 2011 (92 points WA) at £28.80 is a great introduction to the estate. As these wines are probably new to you – we are offering a “taster case” of four bottle each (see below) to begin what we think will become a life-long association!
