We are delighted to offer you the new 2018s from Uco Valley pioneers PerSe and in an almost picture-perfect vintage they have crafted arguably their best wines yet! Scores are through the roof, with a perfect 100 points for La Craie from Luis Gutierrez at the Wine Advocate, but that takes nothing away from both Jubileus (98) and Volare del Camino (96) which are also on tip-top form.
Leading the charge here is the flagship La Craie 2018, a co-ferment of Malbec with the faintest hint of Cabernet Franc that for Luis Gutierrez possesses “Perfect ripeness, perfect balance, perfect extraction, perfect élevage... complex, nuanced and layered. As it happens in wines like this, I only wish I had a magnum rather than a bottle. Bravo!”. Is this South America’s greatest wine? I certainly think so.
Then there’s the Lubileus, from an incredible plot in the Gualtallary Monastery and on storming form with a best-ever 98 points from Guiterrez, who praises “the depth of aromas and flavors” as “breathtaking”. Last but certainly not least is the superb Volare del Camino – Edy and David feel this is the most Burgundian of their wines due to the overwhelming presence of Limestone in the soil, and this offers terroir and world-class winemaking in spades.
This is cerebral winemaking at its best, with each minuscule 0.2-0.5ha plot in Gualtallary obsessively selected for its unique microclimate and terroir, always with the goal of producing the finest cool-climate Malbecs from the region. The results frankly speak for themselves and Gualtallary is now recognised by Decanter as Argentina's first Grand Cru vineyard, largely due to their efforts. Production is comparable to Grand Cru Burgundy with around 1,500 bottles filled annually of each, and given Edy and David are now allocating La Craie and Iubileus in cases of six instead of four, these unicorns are only going to be harder to find!
