Thanks to an itinerary change we were able to spend well over two hours with Philippe in his cellar and tasted everything – including several cuvées from different aged barrels – first from new oak and then from others ten year old. Putting senior Premier Crus and Grand Crus in decade old oak (constantly filled) is a classic example of how, like everything about his wines, Philippe marches to the beat of his own drum.
Philippe echoed the conversations we’d had with several other winemakers about climate change adding that “the vines are adapting quicker than we are”. He suggests the hot vintages from 2015 to 2020 (excepting the cooler 2017) resemble the post war years 1945-49 that were also replete with extraordinary ‘vins gards’. “We have more tannins, more acids, more sugars, more aromatics, more everything”. He doesn’t worry about sorting the grapes as the dry harvests ensure the grapes always arrive in perfect physiological health. He also appreciates the hot summers when out working the vines. “We used to have cold, wet summers like in England, being in the vineyards was shit, I prefer it now”.
I won’t go into detail about the wines, that’s all to come – but lots to love across the appellations and cru levels. I do however think the Fixin and even more so Fixin 1er Cru are well worth a look for anyone wanting to begin their Pacalet journey and was really impressed by the whites. We also tried a Beaujolais ‘vin de primeur’ (Nouveau - 2020) he makes exclusively for Japanese clients and a delicious cremant from Aligote and Pinot Noir ‘Bulles’ – which thankfully is not. Great alternative festive bubbles from one of Burgundy’s true mavericks.

"Philippe has five rows that run from the edge of wall with Vosne Romanée which gives him the full palette of soil types in this largest Grand Cru, from the stones at the top to the marl at the top to the heavier clay nearer the bottom. This is a Clos Vougeot worthy of the best of them. The nose is wild and foresty but majestic too, abounds with minerals, concentrated raspberry and roses, and some bacon fat too. Really juicy yet stony tannins provide the wine’s engine block, giving good drive and excellent grip - pushing the mid-palate along, like a determined No 8. This is certainly a keeper but shows an awful lot of promise, one of Philippe’s star turns in a year where Clos Vougeot has shown another good run of form." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru

If you’d like more than the number shown, or it’s shown as ‘Out of Stock’ / ‘Email to order’, just call us or drop us an email to confirm your order and delivery schedule, as our winemakers send us fresh stocks frequently.

'Express Delivery' (Free Next Day Delivery) is available for orders over £75 placed before 1pm Monday to Thursday. Orders over £75 but placed after 1pm will still benefit from 'Fast & Free Delivery', and will revert to an estimated 1-3 working days. For orders under £75, 'Fast Delivery' is charged at £12.50, arriving in an estimated 1-3 working days.

London Same Day Delivery is available to most London postcodes as listed in our T&Cs, if ordered by 11am Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). For orders over £75 London Same Day, delivery is charged at £15. For orders under £75 London Same Day, delivery is charged at £27.50. If ordered after 11am, you will receive your order on the next working day. We may be able to organise a speedy courier for you, so please call or email us if you have special requests. What a great way to get that wine to your office or home for the evening!

Saturday Delivery costs £30. This option is available to all UK mainland postcodes for orders placed between 1pm on Thursday and 1pm on Friday. This is optional at checkout, to be chosen in place of our standard 1 – 3 working day service. If you specifically need to place an order for Saturday delivery outside of the above times, please contact us at orders@honestgrapes.co.uk and we will see if we can arrange this for you.

CLUB OFFERS
Our Club Offers may take longer to ship, as we collect all of our members’ orders together before ordering them from the winemaker. The expected delivery timelines for each product should be specified on the product page. Otherwise, please contact us for the information. International deliveries are subject to international delivery fees specific for each country, which will be added at checkout based on the country of your delivery address.
