Champagne Pol Couronne Brut

Champagne, France

Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir

This was recently featured in The Independent as one of "20 best champagnes", and it is a lovely champagne for which the House has found a perfect balance between the freshness of the Chardonnay, structure of the Pinot Noir and roundness of the Pinot Meunier.

"A Champagne to pop open for a weekend brunch, this is refreshing and lively with a chiselled limestone structure and grapefruit acidity. Made from almost equal parts chardonnay, pinot meunier and pinot noir, the flavours are well-balanced, while the use of 40 per cent reserve wines and 42 months on the lees gives a nice rounded complexity. It’s great quality and with change from £30, you certainly won’t feel like a muggins."

Nuria Stylianou, The Independent

"The Pol Couronne is a pretty pale gold colour with fine bubbles. An expressive nose that opens with notes of almonds, citrus, hay and field flowers, notes of dried fruit. The mouth is well balanced, lively and delicate. A nice dynamism revealed by notes of grapefruit. The dosage allows the wine to express itself fully on acidulated, limestone notes, all with a beautiful length."

Enjoy on its own, or with prawn ravioli, risotto with green asparagus and mushrooms.

As 'House Champagne' goes, this one is a real winner. After spending weeks and weeks tasting what seemed like hundreds of Champagnes this was our favourite by far at the price point. If you are looking for a rich, complex Champagne that doesn't break the bank then look no further. The Pol Couronne will impress even the most discerning palate and punches well above its weight!

The thing that seems to strike all who taste the Pol Couronne Brut is the impressive complexity and balance for a wine at this level. As well as the vineyard selection, I’m sure this has a lot to do with the fact that the blend has 40% reserve wines from four previous vintages and spends 42 months on the lees evolving and meshing together the various elements. An impressively sophisticated yet accessible style, the dosage of 8.5g of sugar seems just right as well.

Pol Couronne

It was in Hautvillers, in the cradle of Dom Pérignon and that of champagne, where Pol Auguste Couronne was born in 1862. He founded the House in 1887, and with the aim of transmitting a philosophy (in its own right), he performed extensive research on vine growing in Champagne. In 1921 his perseverance was rewarded when he was decorated with the cross of knight of agricultural merit.

Today Pol Couronne is run by Auguste Prevost, with the same spirit and respect for nature, sustainable viticulture, and traditional know-how.
