This wine is offered En Primeur, with an est. delivery late 2024/early 2025.

Introduced through his good friend Pierre Duroché, Magnien’s style of wines is nearer to Dugat-Py, in terms of richness, power and density.

Volumes here were only 15% up on 2021 which Charles puts down to “old vines and no whites”. After ten years experimenting with different barrels (makers, forests, toast levels, grain etc) he is very happy with the oak profile he has settled on for his wines. It is certainly a subject on which he is keen to expound although it is encouraging to record that, in these solar vintages, he uses less new oak as believes the warmth encourages too much extraction. Overall, Charles is keen to extract less, minimising punch downs, and seeking instead an equality between longevity and harmony.

"At the foot of the hill of Corton but technically in the commune of Ladoix. Charles uses a little more new oak here (30%) to give sweeter tannins and more air into the wine. Nose is quite compact and stony with dry earth and a touch of cedar pinioning wild strawberries and a hint of fragrant star anise. There was no pigeage (punch downs) as Charles wanted a more gentle infusion rather than extraction of flavours. Red and blue fruit-accented palate, rich but not unrefined, with a spicy lift and whilst the tannins are still quite structured, this is sophisticated and elegantly crafted for the appellation."

What the critics say:

90-92/100Allen Meadows, Burghound

"Fresh and ripe aromas of wild red cherry, earth and a hint of smoked meat character precede delicious medium weight flavors that possess a really lovely texture while displaying good length on the youthfully austere finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth."
