Long before the introduction of Gran Selezione Riserva Chiantis, or latterly Giovanni Mazzei’s ambitious IPSUS project, Ama has been making wines that set the benchmark for the region and far, far excel their peers.
The estate is situated around the hamlet of Ama at an altitude of between 450 and 550 metres above sea level. This height is important in giving the wines both freshness and elegance, allied to their natural intensity, depth and concentration. A complete renovation of their vineyards and winery in the 1970s was decades ahead of their time and involved installing temperature controlled vats of various sizes, allowing plot-by-plot vinification. If you want an idea of just how far ahead this was, most of the Bordelais have only just completed their own such renovations in the past year or two!
“Castello di Ama remains a reference-point producer in Tuscany… Make no mistake about it, these are some the most pedigreed wines being made anywhere”.
Wine Advocate
“Over the years, owners Lorenza and Marco Pallanti have crafted some of the most riveting wines in Tuscany…simply put, there are few estates in Italy at this level”.
Antonio Galloni
