Within the house of Albert Bichot, Domaine Long-Depaquit is well known for its careful selection of Chablis styles and we have chosen our favourites of the vintage.

"La Moutonne" is a vineyard nestled in a natural amphitheatre at the heart of the Grand Cru sector. Its shape and ideal location make it a natural solar receptor. It has a south/south-eastern exposure and a steep slope of almost 40%, with the vineyard being produced from the north winds making it it ideal for growing Grand Cru Chardonnay. "La Moutonne" is a monopole meaning that Long-Depaquit is the sole owner.

Château Long-Depaquit sits at the centre of the village of Chablis, surrounded by a rose garden. The approach is to limit grape yields in the vineyard, intervention and oak in the winery to develop wines with purity and focus on expression of the individual plots. The winery was modernised in 2014, leading to reduced environmental impact and a step up in quality.

Long-Depaquit are certainly on fine form of late, with their range comfortably and consistently scoring into the mid-90s from Meadows over the last few years, as well as a host of other critics and publications. Meadows describes wines in this bracket as deserving "a special effort to purchase and cellar and will provide memorable drinking experiences". As mentioned the wines are so good, in fact, they often go toe-to-toe with Francois Raveneau’s – now some of the most sought after, and expensive, wines anywhere.

What the critics say:

96/100Andy Howard MW, Decanter

"The unofficial 'eighth grand cru climat', Moutonne is a very exciting wine in 2022. A very sophisticated grand cru with a complex combination of purity, lift and precision on both the nose and palate, freshened with saltiness and iodine notes to finish. Concentrated with ripe fruit character and a lovely balance between power and elegance really lifting this. Wait for several years before broaching. Tank sample, tasted blind."

93-96/100Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"Mid lemon yellow. A chiselled nose, powerful yet without perfumed. Picked on the right day. A little suggestion of passion fruit here, which adds complexity without taking us over the top. Moutonne has harnessed the ripeness very well and delivers a clear-cut intensity, as well as the ripeness of the fruit. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023."

95/100Christy Canterbury MW, Tim Atkin

"This pops off with a bang of dense sweet spice followed by succulent yellow plums and golden raisins. The ample body creeps onto the palate then nests in the center as the long, toasty finish lingers. Apricot pit and sweet peaches abound."

OUR GROWERS

Domaine Long-Depaquit

Domaine Long-Depaquit is one of the region’s most celebrated growers and deservedly so. The wines are consistently excellent from village to Grand Cru, regularly with Chablis’ elite producers, including the likes of Raveneau, yet at prices that are simply ludicrous in the context of Burgundy!
